Deliberative Engagement

Developing an on-going, demand-driven executive programme and supporting materials that will equip business intermediaries with a new set of capabilities and business tools which will enable them to engage with SME’s in powerful ways so that those SMEs can collaborate effectively in solving their common and complex long-term business sustainability problems.

The insights and new knowledge acquired from this project will help HEIs across Europe develop effective and innovative collaborative and co-creational pedagogies; new knowledge about working with intermediaries and SMEs and the issues facing them will be published, and a rich source of research outputs generated.

Project Partners

The consortium implementing the SME-DE project includes the following partners:

Leeds Beckett University
Leeds Beckett University (LBU), PI is a UK higher education corporation that provides access to education for a wide range of learners. The University is located on two main campuses; Leeds city centre and Headingley, Leeds and offers a range of undergraduate and post-graduate courses across four faculties – Arts, Environment & Technology, Business & Law, Carnegie, and Health & Social Sciences. LBU has almost 30,000 students, 3,000 staff and 300,000 associate students through its network of partner colleges.

The Foundation for European Initiatives
The Foundation for European Initiatives (P2 (TFEI)) is a not-for-profit organisation established in 1998, which assists organisations in developing EU partnership and also assisting in EU compliance functions.

University of Udine
Founded in 1978, the University of Udine has a considerable European profile and, being part of a small region (Friuli Venezia Giulia), this is seen as the major route to enhancing the potential of students and the international aspirations of the territory. There are approximately 17,000 students studying at the University of Udine, 730 teaching staff in addition to 560 administrative staff. The faculties are: Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Literature and Philosophy, Faculty of Modern Languages, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Faculty of Sciences. University of Udine incorporates the latest IT-technology in its day to day working and in international co-operation as integral parts of the everyday life of the university. The University has co-operation agreements in Erasmus, Edulink and Tempus. Under the framework of mobility and project co-operation it has more than 200 partner institutions in 32 countries. Every year over 300 students from the University of Udine study or undertake practical training abroad, while at the same time over 250 international mobility students study in different programmes at the University of Udine. The International Office provides up-to-date services for students, international students and staff mobility, in cooperation with regional, national and international organisations and partners.

University of Dubrovnik
The University of Dubrovnik is a state university and a public institution, under the the auspices of the Ministry of Science. It was established in 2003 on the foundation of a long academic tradition which goes back to the 17th century, but also on decades of modern higher education. Through its programmes, organisation and technical equipment, the University of Dubrovnik is regarded as a contemporary and relevant higher education institution. The mission of the University is to contribute to the local, national and international community thorough excellent education and high quality research. Strategies include promoting excellence in faculty and staff, implementation of quality standards, ensuring the mobility of students and faculty, and introducing ECTS credits. The University has eight departments, two institutes and two centres and has a developed network of established relations and exchanges with a number of foreign universities.The Comunication Science Department has fully integrated the Bologne principles in the teaching process. The department enrols students in one undergraduate programme and two graduate programmes (Media and Public Relations). The Communication Department of Dubrovnik University was the first in the country to introduce a holistic undergraduate programme for media and PR and the first masters who graduated two years ago were the only ones in the country that had a fully integrated programme in the communication field for a full five years of study.

Varna Economic Development Agency
Varna Economic Development Agency (VEDA) is a not-for-profit, non-governmental association, registered to operate in public benefit. It is located on the territory of Varna District in Bulgaria, East Europe.The agency was established in 1997 under the joint program of Varna Municipality and USAID to assist the advancement of regional economic development. Since 1998 VEDA is a member of the network of the Bulgarian Association of Regional Development Agencies and Business Centers (BARDA).

Global Alliance
The Global Alliance for PR and Communication Management, is the confederation of the world’s major PR and communication management associations and institutions, representing 160,000 practitioners and educators around the world. The Global Alliance’s mission is to unify the public relations profession, raise professional standards all over the world, share knowledge for the benefit of its members and be the global voice for public relations in the public interest. The Global Alliance works on the cooperative efforts of communication professionals to tackle common problems with a global perspective.

University of Aarhus
With 40,000 students and 11,000 employees, Aarhus University is the largest university in Denmark. As a publicly financed university, Aarhus University is to conduct research and offer research-based education at the highest international level within its academic fields. It also has to engage in dialogue with the business world and society at large (cf. the Danish University Act). The School of Business and Social Sciences (BSS) is a broad business school constituting one of four new areas at Aarhus University. Business and Social Sciences is the largest university unit within business and social sciences in Denmark, encompassing a wide range of academic disciplines, outstanding research environments and strong degree programmes (Financial Times European business schools ranking 2011: 63).

The Involve Foundation
Involve is a charity specialising in public participation and dialogue. It carries out research and delivers training to inspire citizens, communities, organisations and institutions to run and take part in high-quality public participation and dialogue processes. It believes passionately in a democracy where citizens are empowered to take and influence the decisions that affect their lives. Involve has transformed how leading organisations engage, including: the OECD, Communities and Local Government, the European Commission, the States of Jersey, the UNDP, the Cabinet Office and numerous Local Authorities.
